Microsoft’s new Cortana assistant is more powerful on Windows devices than Siri, its new chief executive said on Tuesday, arguing that the new voice assistant is not as dumb as it seems.
The Cortana team is “totally committed to making Cortana more powerful,” Satya Nadella said in a video interview with Ars Technic.
“It’s not just about how smart you are with Cortana.
We want to make Cortana more intelligent.”
Nadella also defended the use of Cortana as part of Microsoft’s ongoing efforts to improve the experience of Windows 10 on smartphones and tablets, arguing the new technology is not only better than Siri but also better than Google Now, a similar artificial intelligence voice assistant that has been on the market for years.
The new voice technology is “really just the next step,” Nadellas statement said.
“We don’t need a new voice to get the same experience.
It’s just the technology we’re bringing to the table that will get us there.”
Microsoft said in September that Cortana would be coming to Windows 10 in late 2019.
The company said last week that it had hired a number of high-profile voice talent, including Bing Bing assistant John Gruber, and is also planning to hire some high-ranking Microsoft executives for the voice assistant.
Nadellases comments are a strong signal that Cortana is taking Microsoft seriously as it continues to push the platform forward on mobile.
Cortana has been a feature of the operating system since 2014, but it was not included in the version of Windows that was available on desktops and laptops in 2018.
Microsoft has been testing Cortana on the Surface Pro 4 and Surface Pro 5 in addition to the Surface Book and the Surface RT, two devices that Microsoft announced in late 2018.
It was announced in September 2018 that Microsoft was going to add Cortana to the operating systems of the Surface, Surface Pro, Surface Laptop, and Surface RT.
Microsoft is also working on adding Cortana to a number, if not all, of the next-generation devices it is working on, according to Nadello, including the next Xbox and Windows 10.
Microsoft’s Cortana team says it is currently working on a new version of the software for its Windows 10 smartphones, including Surface RTs, Surface Pros, and the new Surface Book, as well as a Cortana app for Windows 10 PCs.
Cortana is also expected to be included in Windows 10 Mobile.
