Police on Thursday detained a Palestinian man who was caught at a checkpoint near the Israeli border with Jordan.
Police said the incident took place at around 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, as Palestinians are crossing into Israel from Jordan.
A police spokesperson said the man was arrested by Israeli border police and taken to a police station.
He was identified as Nader Abu Tawfiq, 32, of the town of Ramallah.
He was detained at the border crossing with Jordan, police said.
Tawfiqa was taken to the Jerusalem Police Department for questioning, where he was charged with a violation of the country’s border laws.
“It is very important to point out that this is the start of the ending of this incident,” a police spokesperson told AFP.
“This is a clear violation of international law, which forbids Palestinians from entering the Israeli territory and therefore from entering Jordan, which is a territory that is occupied by Israel.”
Police said Abu Taws death is being investigated by the investigation department, which also investigates the deaths of Palestinian citizens of Israel who were killed while crossing the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip.
“We are doing our best to identify the cause of this man’s death, and we will do our best in the coming days to identify all the perpetrators,” the spokesperson added.
