Medical News today reports that the Conservative government has unveiled its new health plan, which is scheduled to be unveiled on Thursday.
The plan includes a number of changes, including:The plan will offer subsidies for private health insurance plans that have been cancelled, as well as free prescription drugs, free dental care, free child care and more.
It also calls for universal access to all public services, including universal childcare and paid parental leave.
“The Conservatives have a very, very clear strategy for reducing the costs of healthcare and improving the lives of Canadians,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office said that they are aware of the media reports and will take “all appropriate steps” to address them.
“This government has been clear about the importance of a universal single-payer health system, and it’s no surprise that Canadians are concerned about the costs associated with the implementation of a national single-payer system,” the spokesperson said.
“This plan will provide much-needed relief to Canadians while also protecting the interests of all Canadians.
We have the resources to implement this plan with the necessary tools in place, and we will ensure that Canadians have access to affordable health care.”
A spokesperson from the Canadian Medical Association (CMA), the medical trade group, said the CMA is concerned about changes that would lower the eligibility threshold for private insurance plans and the cost of medical care.
“While we understand the government’s intention to simplify the system, it is clear that changes to eligibility thresholds will have a significant impact on the cost and quality of care available to Canadians, particularly those who are older and vulnerable,” CMA president Dr. Mark Toner said in the statement.
“We would also like to see this government ensure that the Canadian public is not saddled with rising healthcare costs when they should have the best available solutions,” he added.
